Last month my brother and I received a check in the mail from our Grandpa in Honolulu. He usually sends us gift money for Christmas, but this wasn't a Christmas check in the middle of July.
It's been several years since I've been back to Honolulu to visit the family. The last time I was there Grandma and Grandpa were pretty healthy. They had their routine...market runs, walk around the mall, Zippy's once a week. But since then, things have changed.

I've been in complete denial that my grandparents were aging. I always thought our Okinawan genes would keep them immortal. But when we got that check, my brother and I knew we needed to see them.
This trip back will be an emotional one.

Safe travels and all my best to your family.
I miss my gramps too.
Enjoy their company while it last I miss mine, I love it coming home from school and they're watching Jerry Springer and they don't even understand a lick of English. LOL
Hoping that it's really just a "Christmas in July" check and that all's well for you and your fam.
Sending best wishes to you and your family. I wasn't able to make my oba-chan's funeral in Okinawa, but was SO grateful I got to visit many times when she was alive.
: )
Enjoy it. I want to go back and eattt....
Welcome back to the 808, as much as things change, some things remain the same, enjoy your stay.
Have a safe trip Jeni. Best wishes to your family and most especially your grandparents. They look like a sweet couple.
This brings back memories of when my sister and I went back with her first son to visit our grandmother in Kauai! I am so glad we made that trip. She passed the following spring. I will always cherish that time. Have a great time! Enjoy them!
Hi Jeni! I just arrived back from Hawaii and all I thought about were my grandparents. My first trip and first family trip with the family was to Hawaii. I am blessed to still have them around.=)
your grandparents look like the cutest couple ever. enjoy your with them. *hugs* to you & your family.
Hope all is well with your grandparents– they look SO adorable!
I tried to think of something to say but times like this I think a *HUG* would be better.
Thank you so much for all your heartfelt wishes. I read all these comments while heading to Hawaii and felt so loved. So many tears were shed, in shock and in happiness. I'm so thankful we were able to see them. Thank you for your support and love!
Your blog is always full of so much love, for family, friends and, of course, food. I really enjoy reading your blog and have nominated it for a small award. I hope you don't mind and that your trip was everything you wanted it to be.
You are so fortunate to spend time with your grandparents. They have wealth of information that they some how think you don't want to hear. I'm glad I asked my grandmother all the questions about her life from where she was born (Camp 3 Makaweli, Kauai) to her favorite activities(watching Japanese soap operas). I'm so anxious to read about your trip.
awww I love grandparents. Prayers for your family!
