Pakistani Soul Food - Al Watan

al watan meats
Poor Dylan was stuck at the office on President's Day. But not having my spicy intolerant boyfriend around on my day off made it the perfect day for a Pakistani run.

A Team
After reading Jonathan Gold's Counter Intelligence years back, I've always wanted to check out Al Noor and Al Watan on Inglewood Avenue. Initially, I was planning to hit up both joints on Monday, but since Al Noor is closed on Mondays, I only made it to Al Watan. Sigh.

J Gold recommends the haleem, "beef braised with something like shredded wheat until it breaks down into a think, meaty gravy with the flavor of well-browned roast-beef drippings and the meat no longer discernable from grain."

nehari
However, my server recommended the nehari, a standard Pakistani dish which consists of a spicy concoction of braised beef, garlic, chilis, shredded ginger, cilantro, and a massive amount of orange oil. MMM!

Pakistani food can be really meaty and super oily. Don't worry. Just wash it down with their tangy Mango lassi and the pain from a clogged artery will cease just in time for you to head into your car to drive home for an after-nehari nap. ZZZZ!

The second you came thru the door, I could smell the aroma emanating from your little doggy bag. The food looked like lava!

Wow... that's a pretty significant layer of stratified oil on the nehari!

Also, thanks for the vote! :)

Spicy and intolerant is exactly how I'd describe Dylan too....he's like a serrano pepper with no patience.
