Hungry in Vietnam - How To Cross the Street

Vietnamese buses don't stop

steady pace

all is well

Crossing streets in Vietnam is an adventure in itself. In Vietnam, just walk. Drivers, both cars and motorbikes all anticipate you to cross the street. So just walk at a steady pace because they will drive around you. The only drivers that won't stop are the public bus drivers...those are the only guys that don't do any swerving. Anyways, if you're headed out to Vietnam, just walk. Trust me, they won't hit you.

Watch others as they attempt to cross the street:

Crossing the streets in Saigon was a daunting experience for me. (Went there last winter.) I don't remember it being that bad when I went to Vietnam 13 years prior.

Haha! I tried several times to film this with me holding the camera while crossing the street. Impossible! I do have lots of video from the back of motorbikes though. :)

Great pictures and video! On my recent trip to Chennai, India, I discovered the same thing. Just cross the street. There are SO many people that they have the power to stop traffic. It was fascinating.

A far cry from trying to cross the street in Boston, or Manhattan, if you don't have the walk signal!

Hi. It is Tam again. Here are some recommendations based upon my experiences in Sai Gon. Am Thuc Nam Bo on 100 Le Lai or 199 Pham Ngu Lao is very close to your hotel. Am Thuc Nam Bo has 2 addressed because it has 2 entrances. The young people there come from the countryside to work. I find them to be courteous and friendly. Everything on the menu is good. I especially like their lau thai lan ~ 90,000 vnd. As mentioned previously, the bo 7 mon at Au Pagolac on 19 Nguyen Dinh Chieu is one of the best for bo 7 mon ~ 80,000 vnd. The cross street is Tran Quoc Thao in Quan 3. An Ngon is very popular with local and overseas Vietnamese. I remember being in Sai Gon when this restaurant was just brand new. The address is 138 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia. Cross Street is Nguyen Du. I always order lots of sinh to to drink when I am here. Lang Nuong Nam Bo makes delicious BBQ food. Order the raw tiger prawns ~ 150,000 vnd, so diep nuong sate ~ 20,000 vnd,and bbq scallops. I am not exactly sure about the address. I believe that it is 546 Cach Mang Thang Tam in Quan 3. I am sure about the street. I am just not sure about the number though. Luong Son is known for their bo tung xeo ~ 55,000 vnd. You get to bbq your own meat that has been marinated. The address is 31 Ly Tu Trong. If you like Chinese food, then try Tan Hai Van on 162 Nguyen Trai. It is close to your hotel. I like their mi vit tiem hoanh thanh ~ 12,000 vnd. If I did not mention what Quan these places are located, then assume that they are in Quan 1. Take care. Don't get fat. There are lots of delicious food in Sai Gon at affordable prices if you have someone to show you.

Beach and I were talking about this post last Saturday. He said your advice to walk at a slow and steady pace is spot on. The drivers are used to people crossing like that and will react accordingly. It's people who run who get into trouble...
